Reading:
Workshop Time includes read aloud, accountable talk, strategy groups, book clubs, reading buddies and writing about reading. We add strategies to our literacy menu daily to increase understanding of what we are reading. We also focus on finding a good fit book , sticking with it and reading stamina. Word Study:
Word Work consists of lots of "word sorts" (which teach kids about the formation of words), vocabulary exposure, sentence structure practice and phonics. We use a quick test from "Words Their Way" to help determine each students level of phonic understanding. This helps in grouping kids for extra work in their needed areas. "Orton Gillingham" is also used for phonics/vocabulary instruction. Science:

Writing:
Each day we write in our Writer's Notebook. We talk as a group and with partners about what we write. We read mentor text to give us ideas. We us resources in the room such as notebooks and dictionaries to help us with better word choice and revising and editing.
